 KITCHEN  FAUCETS

Hometowne Kitchen and Bath Design Center stocks and/or has access to many different faucet companies.  Before making your selection there are some points to consider as faucets can be purchased to fit any style or budget.  They come in all shapes and sizes.  To choose the right faucet to suit your needs there are important things to keep in mind.

Consumer Reports suggest some consideration to spout style and function.  Straight-spout models are compact and often inexpensive, but you might need to move the faucet to fit a large pot under it for kitchen usage.  Gooseneck models have higher clearances, but they can cause splashing in your sink it if is shallow.  No matter what type you select, make sure the faucet head swings enough to each part of the sink, especially if you have a wide or double-bowl kitchen sink.  Also, keep the faucet proportional to the size of your sink.

Consumer Reports also cautions to count holes.   Many sinks come with mounting holes pre-drilled for faucets.  If you're not changing sinks, you'll need to match what you have or get a base plate or some insert cover to cover the extra holes.  The base plate, which may be included, can also be used to cover holes in your counter top if that's where your faucet will be installed.  It's not a good idea to try to drill additional holes in an existing sink or counter top without first checking with the manufacturer or retailer so as notto void any possible warranty.

The basic types of facuets are limited to one hole, center set, widespread, mini-widespread and wall mount.

CENTER SET:   The most common style of center set faucets is the 2-handle where the spout is centered between 2 handles spaced 8" apart
combined at the base.  Individual holes in the sink or counter top are necessary for this type of faucet.  Single-handle faucets are also center set for the most part but both hot and cold water are regulated by a single handle on a base unit.  Both hot and cold water feed through a single hole in the sink or counter top.

WIDESPREAD:   The faucet and the hot and cold water valves are all mounted separately.  Each requires a separate hole in the sink or counter top.  These separate parts usually measure anywhere from 8"-20" apart.
Because these valves are independent of each other, they can be mounted according to the homeowner's taste and not necessarily aligned with the faucet as in the traditional.  Although flexible they generaly cost more.

MINI-WIDEPSREAD:   A variation of the widespread where the valves are located closer together to fit antique sinks or reproductions.  These are installed and operate the same as the widespread designs.

WALL MOUNT:   Many newer kitchen sinks, require or are enhanced with a wall mount facuet.  These are generally of the widespread type with longer spouts in order to extend over the sink ,or stove for pot filling, at a distance.  Many people have opted for a one hole faucet installation for the newer kitchen sinks with off-set bowls.

MOEN

Moen Incorporated, known for its one handle faucet, is one of the largest faucet companies in the world, especially in North America.  Al Moen, was  a college student working in a garage in 1937 when he turned on a facuet and nearly scalded his hands.  This caused the eventual invention of the one-handle faucet he decided was easier to control than the two-handle faucet popular since the invention of runing hot water.  Since that time Moen is also responsible for redesigning the interiors of faucets and creating the washerless cartridge system.  It is also responsible for the aerator that changes the flow of water from a stream to a spray using the same faucet; the riser faucet that extends 10" above the sink; a pressure balance shower valve that eliminates shower shock and offers lifetime warranties.
