BATH FAUCETS
Hometowne Kitchen and Bath Design Center stocks and/or has access to many different faucet companies. Before making your selection there are some points to consider as faucets can be purchased to fit any style or budget. They come in all shapes and sizes. To choose the right faucet to suit your needs there are important things to keep in mind. Do you have a style preference, finish that relates to the other finishes in your room, your sink size and requirements and the number of handles you might prefer.
Consumer Reports suggest some consideration to spout style and function. Straight-spout models are compact and often inexpensive, but you might need to move the faucet to fit a glass in the bathroom. Gooseneck models have higher clearances, but they can cause splashing if your sink is shallow. Keep the faucet proportional to the size of your sink.
Consumer Reports also cautions to count holes. Most sinks come with mounting holes drilled for faucets. If you're not changing sinks, you'll need to match what you have to get a base plate to cover the holes. It's not a good idea to try to drill additional holes in an existing sink or counter top without first checking with the manufacturer or retailer so as not to void any possible warranty.
The basic types of faucets are limited to one hole, center set (usually 4" between the handles), widespread, mini-widespread and wall mount.
CENTER SET: The most comon style of center set faucets is the 2-handle where the spout is centered between 2 handles spaced 4" apart and combined at the base. Individual holes in the sink or counter top are necessary for this type of faucet. Single-handle faucets are also center set for the most part but both hot and cold water are regulated by a single handle on a base unit. Both hot and cold water feed through a single hole in the sink or counter top.
WIDESPREAD: The faucet and the hot and cold water are all mounted separately. Each requires a separate hole in the sink or counter top. These separate parts usually measure anywhere from 8"-20" apart. Because these valves are independent of each other, they can be mounted according to the homeowner's taste and not necessarily aligned with the faucet as in the traditional style. Although flexible they generally cost more.
MINI-WIDESPREAD: A variation of the widespread where the valves are located closer together to fit antique sinks or reproductions. These are installed and operate the same as the widespread designs.
WALL MOUNT: Vessel sinks in particular require or are enhanced with a wall mount faucet. These are generally of the widespread type with longer spouts in order to extend over the sink at a distance. Many people have opted for a one hole faucet installation that are deck mounted sometimes off to one side of the vessel.
